New flying-fish fossilA new flying-fish fossil has been unearthed in the Guizhou Province in south-west China. Known as Potanichthys xingyiensis, it is the earliest example of gliding flish.
Previous fossils of this family (Thoracopteridae) had been found in Europe and belonged to the Late Triassic, but not only is this extremely well-preserved specimen from the middle Triassic - millions of years earlier - it most probably shared a common ancestor with the Austrian and Italian specimens. While the Austrian fossils have scales, the Italian specimens have none. The Asian fossil has just 4 rows of scales heading back towards the tail. The discovery of P. xingyiensis indicates that thoracopteridae lived at both the western and eastern rims of the Paleo-Tethys sea (which disappeared during the Jurassic period). Though it shares many features with today's gliding fish - well-developed pectoral fins, forked asymmetrical tail with a chubby lobe - these are examples of convergent evolution, as the Thoracopteridae family is extinct. It's likely both fish evolved this way to escape predators, and this ability in middle Triassic fish supplies more evidence that ocean life bounced back fairly quickly after the devastating Permian-Triassic Great Dying (http://tinyurl.com/chzpbj7). things. Researchers from the Miquel Crusafont Catalan Paleontology Institute have recently discovered hundreds of new fossilized dinosaur eggs and eggshells at the Coll de Nargo site in Lleida, Spain. After digging through many layers of strata, the team of paleontologists dug up eggs of sauropods, which are among some of the largest animals to ever roam planet Earth. Sauropods were herbivores with extremely long necks and tails that grazed the foliage of trees and shrubbery before becoming extinct some 65 million years ago. The team was led by Albert García Sellés who explained that in addition to finding hundreds of untouched fossilized eggs, four new species that were previously unknown to the area were also discovered including Cairanoolithus roussetensis, Megaloolithus aureliensis, Megaloolithus siruguei, and Megaloolithus baghensis. This is huge in the world of paleontology and prehistoric research since it would suggest that several species shared the same nesting grounds. The discovery of multiple nests also allows researchers to create biochronological scales that have dated the nests as being 71 and 67 million years old. Since the eggs were also found in multiple layers of strata, more than 25 layers in fact; the discovery also indicates that this particular nesting ground was shared by these species for millions of years. Findings like these are why paleontologists are in the field. We have just begun to break the surface in terms of paleontological discoveries, which begs the question; what will we find next? And, where may that be? --Pete D Photo Credit: Mark A. In addition, his participation occurred at a time when people were struggling with the ideas of fossils as evidence of past life, of extinction, and of an Earth far older than the Biblical account. Some of the fruits of Jefferson's paleontology became part of the collections at the American Philosophical Society in Philadelphia. Beginning in 1849 these holdings were transferred over to the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia, where they are currently housed. This is the Thomas Jefferson Fossil Collection. In June, 185...1, Scientific American reprinted a report from the Boston Transcript about how a metallic vase, found in two parts, was dynamited out of solid rock 15 feet below the surface in Dorchester, Mass. The design on vase is definitely of Hindu origin. This kind of art can be seen extensively in Bidriware which is prepared by inlaiding silver. This is unique to Bharat(India) only. Such craftmanship is also visible in some parts of Bihar and other northern region. The bell-shaped vase ,measuring 4-1/2 inches high and 6-1/2 inches at the base, was composed of a zinc and silver alloy. On the sides were figures of flowers in bouquet arrangements, inlaid with pure silver. The estimated age of the rock out of which it came: 100,000 years. Pegomastax africanusA new species of dinosaur was discovered from fossils found in South Africa back in the 1960's, and recently found in a collection at Harvard University by a palaeontologist named Paul Sereno. Pegomastax africanus, or "thick jaw from Africa," is one of the smallest dinosaurs every discovered, growing to 45 cm long and less than 20 cm high, and its jaws are a measly 2.5 cm long each. It belonged to a group of dinosaurs called heterodontosaurs, which were small herbivores with prominent canine teeth. It lived in Southern Africa around 200 million years ago, when Pangaea began to split into northern and southern continents.
Its appearance would have been bizarre. It had a short parrot-like beak, two stabbing canines, and tall teeth meant for slicing plants and picking fruit. This may be strange for a plant-eating dinosaurs, although some herbivores today (like fanged deer) also sport these large canines, which are mainly used as self defense. P. africanus was also covered in long porcupine-like bristles that were probably meant to make the animal look bigger. Overall, this dinosaur's physiology was ahead of its time, with a jaw structure similar to those of mammals that did not appear until millions of years later. Its small size makes it stand out in a world of giant dinosaurs, and Sereno joked that it would have probably made a good pet, "if you could train it not to nip you." have seen in countless movies and books. Here we see a specimen on display in the American Museum of Natural History in 1905. Its great size brought awe and wonder to visitors. But wait. Brontosaurus never actually existed. This has been established for years now, but its legacy lives on. Why? To understand, we'd have to look back at the so-called "Bone Wars" that took place between two paleontologists, Yale's O.C. Marsh and Edward Drinker Cope of Philadelphia. Marsh and Cope were rivals, and constantly tried to outdo the other by discovering and naming as many new dinosaur species as possible. In the late 1800's, Marsh discovered an incomplete skeleton he deemed Apatosaurus, and because he wished to beat his rival, he used the head of another sauropod (most likely a Camarasaurus skull) to complete the specimen in time for publication. Later, he discovered a more complete specimen of Apatosaurus, but due to subtle differences, he named it a new species; Brontosaurus. Both were put on display with wrong heads and features in museums around the world. A few scientists noticed that the two species might be one in the same in the early 1900's, but it wasn't until the 1970's when Carnegie scientists finally noticed the wrong skull placement, and corrected the controversy once and for all. Apatosaurus was given the right head, and the Brontosaurus had disappeared. But the Brontosaurus never actually disappeared. We still continue to see it appear in children's books, cartoons, and movies. In the past, the Brontosaurus was considered the classic example of a dinosaur; a swamp-dwelling, lumbering lizard with a tiny brain. Most scientists agreed on this, and now we only have to look back at the Brontosaurus to realize how far we have come in the field of paleontology. Now, the sauropods are seen as lighter, mobile dinosaurs that kept their bodies mostly off the ground and out of the swamp. We are also reminded that preparing fossils and specimens is a difficult job and mistakes are common; a more recent example of this is the discovery that the Triceratops might simply be a younger version of the Torosaurus (link below). The study of dinosaurs is never-ending, and it is always changing. It took 12 days to excavate the 2000kg triceratops, and Dr. François Therrien, curator of dinosaur palaeoecology at the Royal Tyrrell Museum, said it looked like a huge “log jam” of bones in the dirt. The discovery will allow palaeontologists to compare similarities and differences of the Alta triceratops with those found in Saskatchewan and Montana, and this may offer some insight into why Triceratops is much rarer in Alberta than the other mentioned locations. Archeology, Archeology, Australia & Pacific, History, Science 7 September, 2014 Ruins of Ancient City Discovered in Australian Desert Alice Springs| A team of archaeologists working for the Australian National University, who were proceeding to an excavation near the sandstone rock formation of Uluru, has unearthed the ruins of a large precolonial city dating back to more than 1500 years ago. The important number of tombs and artefacts already discovered on the site suggests that it could have been the capital of an ancient empire, completely unknown to historians until now. The site which was first noticed on satellite pictures taken in October 2013, using a newly developed ground-penetrating radar. The images revealed many 90° angles and various common geographic figures over a 16 km2 area, leading the team of scientists to direct some archaeological excavations on the spot, starting in May 2014. Over the last few months, many structures have been unearthed including what looks like a royal palace, a few temples, large rainwater reservoirs, workshops and dozens of houses. 287 individual tombs have already been discovered in a small necropolis located just outside the ancient city. The bodies are mostly of proto-aboriginal origins, but also surprisingly include a few Polynesian and Asian individuals. Professor Walter Reese, in charge of the site, claims that the extent of the site and the superposition of various layers of constructions, suggests that it was occupied for 400 to 500 years, from approximately 470-80 AD, up until the 9th Century. He believes that the city could have held between 20000 and 30000 inhabitants, making it the most important center of civilization in the Southern Pacific at the time. “This was certainly the capital of a vast empire, that practised some sort of international trade” says Mr Reese. “The fact that we have discovered some bodies of various origins suggests that this state could have been a very influential throughout the Pacific islands and Southeast Asia. We have found many objects on the site that were obviously imported from other regions, like rice, flax or lacquer.” The various artefacts gathered from the site suggest that the city flourished thanks to some form of control over various gold mining operations in Southern Australia. The precious metal was purified and transformed by the hundreds of goldsmiths of the city before being traded for various other goods through an extensive network reaching as far as New Zealand, Indonesia, Malaysia, and even China and India. |
