Although the walking ability of all participants improved during the study, those who experienced short-term hypoxia increased more, speeding up 3.8 seconds on walking a distance of 10 meters. In a 100 meter walk, individuals who had the hypoxia treatment increased their speeds by 250% compared to those receiving the sham treatment. The researchers believe that the low oxygen environment sets off a cascade of changes via spinal serotonin that improves walking ability.
